The Principality Of The Coral Islands

The Year's Most Popular Names In The PCI

The annual census includes data on the trends in the Principality Of The Coral Islands. One of its most popular features is the report on the most popular names given to newborns. Here follow the top ten for each gender, arranged with the most popular first and the tenth-place name last. Remember that these are only a small sampling, and that everyone's name is of equal merit, no matter how popular it is.

Female Names:

1.   Kalissa
2.   Maria
3.   Anna/Cirinne (Tie)
4.   Elise
V.   Grace
6.   Demet
7.   Meridith
8.   Hero
9.   Mattaea
10. Feray

Male Names:

1.   Ian/Schatz (Tie)
2.   Nazamar
3.   Simon
4.   Aydin
5.   Luc
6.   Emir
7.   Amadeus
8.   Yoran
9.   Marcus
10. Uwe

The names that people are given reflect the social trends of the society in which those people live. The name Maria has been in the top three for as long as the census has measured names, due to its religious significance. Nazamar Kreise is a household name in the PCI after his stellar leadership of the Kint Province team in last year's Festival Of The Rings, and after his decision to forsake his position as team captain and millions in endorsements in order to do missions work abroad. Demet, a very common name half a century ago, is the name of the main character in the nation's most popular television show. There is little doubt as to the reason for the sudden explosion in the name Emir. The musician of that name sold as many albums in the PCI last year as there are households in the country.
In the past, even politics has affected the trends in the naming of newborns. Principal Turtlecrest's children are named Eliana, Maria, Antony, Sabine, and Darrius. When Sabine and Darrius were born six years ago both their names appeared on the top-ten lists, and the name Kie is currently in sixteenth place. Kalissa, of course, is the first name of the Finance Minister, Kalissa Xir; although she (And most likely most of the other people with the name) herself is named after the discoverer of the Coral Islands, Kalissa Grimm-Onur.
